This bireme should be printed out using a FDM printer with at least a 22x22cm printing plate. The native scale is 1:72 and the two hull parts should be printed out diagonally. For a smaller result, a 1:100 scale model can also be attempted. The result looks good as an empty model on the stand, it will look great if a rowing crew and some rigging and/or a sail are added. The pictures show my own result with about half the crew of 68 rowers added.
Greek Bireme 400-500 BC
$10.00
This bireme model is patterned after the one that is famously depicted on one of the Vulci vases. It seats 68 rowers and would have been about 25 metres long in real life. The standard complement of rowers probably would have been closer to 100 men, but I wanted to be able to place all my rowers reasonably easily while still not getting in each others way. The pictures show my result after 2 months of painting rowers during my weekends.
The rowers and a set of additional crew (pipers, marines, steersmen) are provided as a separate item on this site. The model comes in two pieces that you need to print out separately (see pictures) and then glue together. The result in native 1:72 scale will be 35 cm long (not counting some boarding ladders that you can place at the back). I have included a mast and a yard, but there are no sails provided.
I’ve included a half-size version of all main parts that should allow you to print out a 1:144 scale version also.
