There is very little information on CSS Savannah. What is known is that she was built by H.F. Willink in Savannah, Georgia in 1863. She was transferred to the Confederate navy in the middle of the year and essentially just sat on the Savannah River for her entire life. She maintained this strange reputation of being the most efficient boat in her squadron even though she never saw combat and never left the river. She was burned on December 21, 1864 to prevent capture when General Sherman threatened Savannah during his march to the sea.
