USN Gridley Class Destroyer

$8.00

The Gridley class destroyers were a class of 4 ships. Built in 1935 ~ 1938.

The Gridley class layout was similar to the Bagley and Benham class Destroyers, which were build during the same period. All three classes included sixteen 21 inch (533mm) torpedo tubes, the heaviest torpedo armament ever on USN destroyers.

As built;

4 x 5 inch (127 mm)/38 caliber guns, 4 x .50 caliber machine guns, 16 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes (4 x 4) and 2 depth charge racks. (Type 1)

After the upgrades in 1942 ~ 1943;

4 x 5 inch (127 mm)/38 caliber guns, 7 x 20 mm Oerlikon guns, 16 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes (4 x 4), 4 K-gun depth charge throwers and 2 depth charge racks.

The Gridley Class was the only type of the 1930 / 1940s Destroyers not to receive 40 mm Bofor guns due to stability concerns.

All four ships survived WW2.
