Sassacus spent her entire career as part of the naval force guarding the numerous sounds in North Carolina. Her career would be relatively quiet until 1864 when CSS Albemarle steamed into Albemarle Sound. She and seven other ships would battle her for several hours in the sound. During the battle, Sassacus would find herself optimally positioned and rammed Albemarle. Unfortunately, she would become stuck in Albemarle, who would proceed to fire two rounds at point blank and completely disable Sassacus putting her out of the fight. She would later tow USS Louisiana to Beaufort, NC after her conversion to bomb ship, and would participate in the bombardment of Fort Fisher.
