Galena was the third of the potential ironclads built to counter the Confederate ironclads. Her armor was made up of interlocking iron plates covering her hull and deck. The drawback to this new armor, was that it was only 3″ thick on the sides and half that on the deck. At Drewry’s Bluff, she as hit 44 times from the enemy guns, 13 of which penetrated. In 1863 most of her armor was removed and she was rebuilt as a 3 mast schooner. After her refit, she would go on to blockade Mobile, and took part in the Battle of Mobile Bay. This model of USS Galena is in her pre-1863 configuration.
