It is unknown when Spuyten Duyvil (originally called Stromboli) was launched and commissioned, but it is known that her name was changed to Spuyten Duyvil in late-1864. Spuyten Duyvil was built quite different from most torpedo boats at the time. First, she was relatively heavily armored with 3 inches of armor on her deck and 5 inches on the hull. She also had a pair of water tanks fore and aft that could be flooded to partially submerge the boat and lower her profile by about 3ft. Her mopst defining feature was the set of clamshell doors and advanced torpedo machinery in the bow that allowed for the projection of torpedoes entirely underwater. She was sent up the James River to assist in Grant’s push on Richmond and was present with USS Onondaga in January 1865 when the James River Squadron attacked at Trent’s Reach. After Richmond was abandoned, she used her torpedoes to clear obstructions in the river which allowed President Lincoln to travel safely up the river to Richmond. After the war ended she continued to clear obstructions on the river and was then sent to New York and planed in ordinary. Over the next several years she was used for extensive developmental work and had many experimental improvements. Her fate is unknown and she disappeared from the Navy records in 1880.
