The ship that was to become Essex was originally built in New Albany, Indiana under the name New Era. She was acquired by the US Army for use it the Western Gunboat Flotilla and underwent conversion into a timberclad gunboat. Shortly after her participation in the Cumberland River expedition she was converted into a light ironclad. Some months later she was converted once again, this time much more drastically and without official army authorization, into a heavier ironclad gunboat. She was lengthened, widened, re-engined, and re-armored. Once the alterations were complete, she was sent down the Mississippi to aid in the Vicksburg campaign. It was here that Essex would clash with the Confederate ironclad CSS Arkansas and eventually cause her to be scuttled. Two months after her encounters with Arkansas, Essex would be officially transferred to the Navy and participate in the bombardment of Port Hudson and the occupation of Baton Rouge. She would also participate in the Red River campaign. She was decommissioned in July 1865, and returned to civilian service in 1870 under her original New Era name. She would be scrapped in 1870.
