CSS Tuscarora had an incredibly short life of less than a year. However, this short life was quite eventful. She was built and launched sometime in 1861 in Philadelphia. She was then sent to New Orleans and operated by the Southern Steamship Company as a towboat. She was purchased and placed into Confederate naval service in the same year, and was outfitted for war. She was placed in the Mosquito Fleet alongside CSS Ivy and the ironclad CSS Manassas and fought at the Battle of the Head of Passes where she pushed a fire raft and harassed the Yankee fleet with long range fire. In November, she was sent up the Mississippi River to support defenses at Columbus, Kentucky. While at Columbus, a fire started in her boilers and was not extinguished before reaching the magazine. Fortunately she was beached before the explosion and nobody was seriously injured. There were several attempts to salvage the wreck, however none were successful. The wreck was reportedly still visible at low tide as late as 1870.
