The M42 was a development of the U.S. Army’s World War II era concept for a highly mobile, rapid firing anti-aircraft artillery system designed to protect tactical forces from low-level air attack. The predecessor to the M42 was the M19 Gun Motor Carriage, which was produced in 1944 (also available as a design on this site). The M42 armoured chassis was developed from that used for the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank and was equipped with twin 40mm Swedish Bofors anti-aircraft guns mounted in a power driven open-topped turret or rotating shield. During its nearly seven year production run, from 1952 to 1959, a total of 3,700 M42/M42A1s were built.
Two variants of the design are offered, one for fdm printing with separate hull and tracks, and a second integrated version for resin printing. The latter is offered with hollow and solid hulls to suit individual preference. The turret is common, and a separate 50 cal strengthened MG design is offered to instal on the side or rear location if so desired. Care may need to be taken with the 40mm gun barrels, as these are relatively thin.
The product is offered for personal, non-commercial use. Derivative designs for personal use may be generated, but neither the original nor derivatives may be shared with others. Attribution of the design is requested should printed models be exhibited or otherwise shared. Models printed from this design or derivatives may not be sold commercially.
