CSS Ivy
Put up a fight!
CSS Ivy began her wartime service as a privateer out of New Orleans capturing Yankee commercial vessels in the Gulf of Mexico. Coincidentally, one of the vessels she would capture was the icebreaker Enoch Train, better known as the future ironclad CSS Manassas. She was driven up the Mississippi River when the Yankees moved in to blockade the mouth of the river, and she participated in the Battle of the Head of Passes pushing a fire raft and providing long range fire while Manassas did most of the work. Ivy and the rest of the squadron she was a part of, the Mosquito Fleet, were sent farther up the Mississippi where she and the fleet would fight against the Yankee ironclads at Island No. 10 where they were forced to retreat. Upon hearing of the fall of New Orleans and the forts guarding the river, Ivy and the remnants of the Mosquito Fleet were sent to Yazoo City, Mississippi where they were thought to be safe. This safety didnt last long as Yankee vessels soon sent a force up the Yazoo River. CSS Ivy and the remaining vessels of the Mosquito Fleet were burned to prevent capture.
