CSS Stonewall

Savior of the Confederacy?

Unable to construct more advanced ships in the face of the Union blockade, the Confederacy commissioned British and French shipyards to build ships for them. CSS Stonewall was built in a French shipyard at Bordeaux, under the cover name of Sphinx, as an ironclad ram. She was initially sold to Denmark after French builders were forbidden from selling to the Confederacy. It turned out that Denmark didn't want the ship, and sold it to the Confederates anyway who commissioned her as CSS Stonewall. She never reached the Confederacy however, as she was captured at Havana, Cuba and was turned over to the US Navy.

She was then sold to the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan, renamed Kotetsu and saw action at Hakodate Bay at the end of the Boshin War during the Meiji Restoration. After the war she was renamed once again to Azuma and saw a minor role in the Saga Rebellion and the Taiwan Expedition in 1874 and saw little use during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877. She was stricken from the Japanese naval record in 1888 and sold for scrap in 1889.
