Huge Viking Longship with Crew, 64-seater, ca. 950 AD (Drakkar Class)

This, the ultimate dragon ship, comes from the dynastic wars period of the late viking era.  The model is based on the remains of longboats found in Haithabu, Roskilde and Skuldelev.  Such ships were extremely long and narrow and it is difficult to imagine the crew carrying anything with them except some personal equipment and provisions.  The model here is slightly larger than it probably would have been in real life, simply because I had some trouble making the spaces between oarsmen any smaller than they are here !

This dragon ship model will be 52 centimetres long and the hull comes in four parts.  Everything in the pictures was printed out on a FDM printer with a 22x22cm printing plate.  Some elements, such as the masts, need to be  printed diagonally.  A crew is supplied, along with oars, seats and shields.  The strips with the shield holders should be glued on the rim of the hull before adding in the shields.   Reduction to 50% of original size should be possible for all elements except the oars.  Note some thicker oars are included in my free small longboat, which can be used as alternatives here at smaller sizes.

You had to be either a king or very close to it to command enough resources to order a ship like this.  Similarly, you should book at least a week of time on your FDM printer to print just the hull of this monster in the original 1:72 size.  Oh yes, and check your shelf space situation before you go ahead !
