The CHOAN MARU is a Japanese passenger ship built in 1934, for Chosen Kisen K.K. (朝鮮汽船, means "Korean Steamships" in Japanese) by Mitsubishi Jukogyo (Mitsubishi Heavy Industry).
In 1941, the ownership changed to Nishinnihon Kisen, and later in August, the ship was requisitioned by the IJN, registered as small auxiliary minelayer in Sasebo.
