The War of the Pacific, also known as The Saltpeter War, was a 5 year conflict between the South American nations of Chile, Peru, and Bolivia. The war began over a disputed tax on nitrates between Chile and Bolivia. Peru was drawn into the War due to a secret alliance between them and Bolivia. In actuality, the War only lasted for about two years before it was reduced to mostly guerilla fighting from the remnants and irregulars of the Peruvian army. The first five months of the conflict was a purely naval campaign required due to the mountainous terrain making it difficult to transport troops by land. Crushing the Peruvian naval presence meant that Chile could transport troops by sea unimpeded.
