USS Puritan

Big, bad, and never launched!

USS Puritan was laid down in 1863, and was originally designed by John Ericsson to have two turrets, each mounting two 20-inch Dahlgren guns. She was part of an effort alongside Dictator and several other ocean going monitors in the event that the British or French became involved in the war. Due to weight issues, Ericsson was persuaded to alter the design to a single turret in 1865, still mounting a pair of 20-inch guns. Delays in her construction and issues with casting the massive guns, Puritan was never completed and she remained on the stocks and sold to John Roach in 1874. During the rebuilding of the navy in the 1870s and 1880s, Congress told the Navy Department that the languishing Civil War ironclad was being repaired. However in reality, due to Congress refusing to fund the construction of new ships at the time, Puritan was being completely rebuilt with the funds allocated for the repairs.
