US: Hermaphrodite Schooner (Prince de Neufchatel), 1813-1815
Prince de Neufchatel was an armed American privateer during the War of 1812. Noted for her speed, heavy armament, and successful career in European waters. She was eventually captured in 1814.
Built in New York, Prince de Neufchatel sported a hermaphrodite rig combining the rigs of a schooner and brigantine.
She repeatedly outran Royal Naval vessels and famously defeated a boarding attempt by boats from HMS Endymion.
Prince de Neufchatel was eventually compelled to surrender on December 28, 1814, to the British after being unable to outrun a squadron of British frigates. She was broken up in England in 1815.
