Saxon APC (British)
1:100 model of the British Army Saxon APC
The Saxon APC was developed by GKN (as the AT104/5) to meet a British Army requirement for a wheeled armoured personnel carrier. It was procured to provide the Regular BAOR reinforcement units in the UK with a means of travelling to West Germany in an emergency, and providing them with armoured protection once there. It is a straightforward 4x4 vehicle based on available Bedford MK components. The Saxon is also produced in recovery vehicle and command post variants. Some extra vehicles were produced for use by the RA's Rapier batteries as Command Posts, and had extra radio and mapping equipment. The Saxon is very suitable for TA and Regular British units in Cold War scenarios, and can be adapted for use in counter-insurgency scenes. It complements other vehicles available on this site, such as the FV432 and forthcoming Warrior APC, and adds a new dimension to such wargames. It was also used by some Far Eastern Commonwealth countries, and was recently brought into service by the Ukranian army (see https://www.defence24.com/useless-saxon-vehicles-surprisingly-useful-in-ukraine-kiev-benefits-from-the-cost-effect-ratio).
The body of this model has been split into four parts to ease printing, and should present no significant challenges. Two wheel types are provided, one to fit onto the axles and one as the spare, which is mounted under the vehicle body. A separate rear panel is provided to ensure that this can be printed at full fidelity. The two top body parts have location holes to assist in aligning these parts. A 2.5 mm dowel cut to the appropriate length provides the keying. The rear face of this first sub-assembly should be sanded lightly to ensure that the rear panel fits snugly before gluing. The chassis can then be abutted to the protruding end plate to assist in location. Again, the lower surface and chassis should be lightly sanded to ensure a good fit. If desired, a GPMG can be added on a pintle by the commander's position, but this is not provided.
I have now added a second zip file that contains the complete models for those using a resin printer, as this seems to work better on this technology.
