Mortar Barge
Hit them from waaaaaaaay over there!
Mortar Barges were used extensively during the Civil War, especially by the Union. These types of mortar barges were of very simple construction, using a standard flat-bottomed barge as a base. The barge was then built up and fitted with walls. The mortars fitted were 13" pieces made at the Fort Pitt Foundry in Pittsburgh and fired a 227lb shell over 4500 yards. With such a large armament fitted, there was hardly room for the crew, let alone any sort of propulsion system, therefore the barges had to be moved into place by other boats. During the fighting along the Mississippi River, mortar barges would be used in an attempt to disrupt enemy movements and fortifications at Island No. 10 and Fort Pillow. The fire from the mortars was too unpredictable however, and they had little effect on the outcome of these engagements.
This ship is modeled in 1/600 scale and can be printed using any resin or FDM printer. Ship comes with and without base.
When printing in FDM, some details may be too small to print with a stock 0.4mm nozzle.
