Another one of the civilian boats bought by Ellet for his ram fleet, Lancaster took part in the Battles of Plum Point Bend and Memphis with the fleet where she served a supporting role. She would steam downriver to Vicksburg to aide in the capture of the city. While working around Vicksburg, Lancaster would come very close to ramming the Confederate ironclad Arkansas as she steamed to the protection of the city. Only a 100 yards from the enemy ironclad, Arkansas unleashed a broadside upon Lancaster puncturing her steam lines and making her unmanageable. She would drift downriver until Queen of the West was able to tow her to safety. Once repaired and returned to service, she would return to Vicksburg performing tasks such as reconnaissance, escorts, and towing. In March 1863, Farragut managed to slip two of his ships past the guns at Port Hudson to blockade the Red River and prevent the Confederates from maneuvering from its mouth. He requested reinforcements and USS Switzerland and USS Lancaster were chosen to go. While attempting to slip past the guns, the ships were spotted by enemy gun batteries and fired upon. Lancaster took the brunt of the attack, with a shell exploding in her steam drum, rendering her inoperable, and another shot puncturing her hull. Ellet ordered her abandoned and she sank to the bottom of the mighty Mississippi.
