While the S Boats had all the glory, the Räumboote (R Boats) were in many ways the backbone of the Kriegsmarine’s coastal forces. Originally designed as minesweepers, they were used in every theatre that the Kriegsmarine reached as convoy escorts, patrol boats, air-sea rescue boats and minelayers.
A number of different varieties or R Boat were produced throughout the war. The R-41 type R Boats were built from 1939 through to 1943 and displaced around 125 tons. They were slow, at around 20 knots, but were surprisingly manouverable thanks to their Voith–Schneider cycloidal propellers.
