Oceangoing Knarr with Crew, AD1000 (Vinland and Hastings Scenarios)

Here are two possible scenarios for this larger Knarr:

“Horses for Hastings” scenario: There are four different horse poses. No saddles or blankets, they are supposed to just be tied from a ring at their heads to the sides of the boat as shown in the Bayeux Tapestry. There are four attendants who are either handling the horses or handling the rigging on the boat. Of course there is a coxwain too. Since this is supposed to be a supply ship, and it is heading into a war zone, there are also various bundles of war stuff. Many different swords. Spears. Shields (round and conical). Axes. The horses need food too — for the trip and for the first few days until the army either loses to Harold’s more experienced army or finds enough local forage, so…..bales of hay.

“Vinland” scenario: This is about a group of Greenlanders who are taking a boat filled with provisions and supplies to another settlement that is just a little bit further away. The weather is probably rainy. Cold. Foggy. These guys will need some kind of a tarpaulin-like covering across a section of the ship. Likely that would be their spare sail. My choice was to position this tent in front of the mast so that it can be tied over the sides of the boat without interfering with the rigging. Three of the crew are ladies to make this more of a co-ed ship. We also need two upright storage stands that the crew can tie the tent/tarpaulin/spare sail shelter device to. We also need six oars, plus some poles, for poling the ship away from the coast in order to head back to sea (again, check this out in the Bayeux Tapestry). Use the storage stands to then store the yard, poles, oars and other clunky stuff when they are not being used.
