The Hungarian 44M Macethrower

The “Minor Powers” available to Bolt Action players are too often ignored when army building. Each “‘Minor Power” nation offers unique weapon and unit choices, adding new flavour to the game. In this case it’s the Hungarian army and its hot paprika tank killer packs a punch.

The Hungarian 44M “Buzogányvető” / Macethrower was a Hungarian designed heavy antitank weapon, created to address by the ever more daunting Soviet tank threat facing Hungarian troops on the East Front. The 44M consisted of a launcher capable of holding two rockets with the gunner operating from weapon’s left side.

Although originally designed to be mounted on an ungainly tripod mount, in the field it was normally mounted on the wheeled carriage of captured Soviet HMGs. The 44M was also mounted on tanks and on the backs of trucks (something not yet represented in Bolt Action).

Two types of ammunition where developed, a shaped charge for use against armour and an HE round for use against troops and soft targets. The rockets were fin stabilized, over 1 meter in length with a warhead over 8” in diameter. In Bolt Action this gives the 444M a pen of 7+ with an AT round (super heavy AT gun) with no degradation in penetration due to range, as it is a shaped charge weapon. Its HE round is the equivalent to a medium howitzer, with a 3” HE Template.

Game wise, the M44 Macethrower was introduced in the Fortress Budapest book, page 120. Now stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Warlord Games wrote the weapons listing with a food processor, so there has been some discussion it a player can fire one or two rounds a turn. The consensus is they fire one round a turn, but the next round must the same type as the first (e.g., you load it with either two AT or HE rounds, and fire them in two separate turns. Only then can you load two more rounds– 2 x HE or 2 x AT). Additionally, due to its “small carriage”, it is considered part of a passenger count of a transport; the three crew and the 44M taking up 6 passenger spots in total in any transport.

This .stl pack includes

  • the 44M, including a pre-supported file.
  • an .stl for the rocket itself, in case you wish to print a few and add them to a metal or plastic open-handed figure, or merge it with a suitable .stl in CAD, and
  • the .stl for the optional 60mm x 60mm base plate.

This model is only suitable for resin printing, the detail is too fine for a successful FDM print The 60 x 60 mm optional base, however, prints will in FDM.

The model itself is a little “tippy”, given the gun shield and aiming mechanism are all on the left side of the carriage. While it sits level on its own, it may tip to the left if the table is banged. To answer this, and ease storage and play concerns. I included an optional 60mm x 60 mm textured base .stl, which itself has a 28mm recess. This recess allows a regular 25mm based figure to be place in the gunner’s spot. The 44M print is them glued to the flocked base, and you can place any 25mm mini in the recess (please see photos).
