DRG Class 38 Steam Engine

$7.50

When the DRG first nationalized and consolidated the German regional railways, they categorized the disparate locomotives each had used into several classes, based on performance and intended function. As such, the DRG Class 38 was a grouping of several models of steam engine with similar performance characteristics. The most prevalent, and longest serving of this class, was the former Prussian P8.

Originally designed as an express passenger engine, the strong all-around performance of these 2’C (4-6-0) locomotives meant that they were soon employed in every possible role as a mixed goods engine. More than 3,700 were eventually produced, and served as the multi-purpose backbone of the German railways for decades. Indeed, such was their value, that despite having first entered service trials in 1906, these engines weren’t finally withdrawn until 1974.
