CG-4 Waco – Hadrian Glider – 1/64th and 1/56th scale

The Second World War saw the introduction of many innovative concepts. One of the most notable yet short lived was the combat glider. The German’s stunned the world with their use of gliders in May 1940, allowing them to seize the Belgian fort at Eben-Emael, and less successfully, seize airfields in the Netherlands.

The Western Allies took note and both Great Britain and America launched programs to build and deploy gliders to deliver troops and weaponry directly into the battlefield.

The most prolific of these was the CG-4, known as the Waco in American service and as the Hadrian in Commonwealth service. Almost 14,000 of these wood and fabric gliders were manufactured during the war.

The Waco could carry 13 troops, or alternately a jeep, a 75mm pack howitzer, and up to two tons of cargo could be carried. The CG-4 glider had a upward tipping nose section, which allowed an expedited method to unload vehicles or cargo.

The Waco was employed in all major air landings in the Western front, but post-war the combat glider concept fell from favour and the Waco’s service life ended shortly thereafter.

This model was designed, and test printed for FDM printing. It would certainly print in resin, but I am not able to print parts that large in my resin printer. As it is a sizable model, I have designed with two full sets of .stls, on at 1/64th scale model and a second as a 1/56th model. The 1/64th models are the ones featured in the photos. At 1/64th scale it has a wingspan of 16” and a length of over 9”. The 1/56th model would be a little over 12% larger than that. The .stl pack has the option for a model with the open nose (titled up), and one with the nose in the airworthy position.

All the parts interlock in recessed bayonet lug fittings- (fuselage, wings, landing gear, landings skids, wing struts, etc.), to ensure ease of assembly and a sturdy model.
