Russian T-64 tank – at the time of its introduction, the most advanced tank in the world. It included such advanced features as optical range finder (a first for a Russian tank), composite armour on both hull and turret, special lightweight suspension, multifuel engine, automatic loader for main gun (and thus 3-man crew. Later innovations included 125mm smoothbore gun and RWS for the commander (T-64A), and gun-launched long range AT missile (AT-8 Songster) (T-64B).
Apparently because of these advanced features, the vehicle was never exported.
All of these features were crammed into a tank that was smaller and lighter than an M-60, with at least equal armour and greater firepower.
However all of these advanced features came at a cost – twice that of a T-72.
Also at the cost of reliability, especially of the suspension and engine. The engine took almost 20 years of development before it became adequately reliable, with the result that many T-64As were delivered straight to storage or training units while the less advanced T-72 took its place in the front lines.
Until the advent of the T-80, T-64s were continually updated rather than retired, which makes for a real mess when trying to tie down versions.
Vehicles included:
T-64 (early) 115mm gun, unique front armour shape and engine deck.
T-64 T-64 with gill armour.
T-64R T-64 updated to T-64A equivalent (except no spade or RWS), snorkel on turret rear.
T-64R Late T-64 updated to T-64B equivalent (except no spade or applique armour, possibly no RWS) Use T-64R late hull, T-64B turret.
T-64A early 125mm gun, gill armour, commander’s RWS, no thermal sleeve.
T-64A mid rear storage bin, thermal sleeve. (Smoke launchers optional).
T-64A late smoke launchers on turret, revised rear storage bin, skirts replaced gill armour
T-64B early New optics for missile guidance, no smoke launchers, gill armour
T-64B New optics for missile guidance, revised smoke launchers, choice of gills or skirts.
T-64B1 Cost-cutting model of T-64B with no missiles or missile guidance, choice of gills or skirts.
T-64BV Skirts, full ERA package.
T-64BV late Striaght-cut skirts (like T-80), full ERA package.
All models should have a no-fuel option with long range tanks removed.
All models with gill armour should have the option of closed gill armour moulded on, or seperate gill armour panels which must be glued in the prefered positions to the mounting bosses.
There is an open-hatch option for all turrets, using a seperate cuppola part. For pre-T-64A versions, there is a alternate one-piece closed option.
Models with a full ERA package really are the pits to draw.
